Scranton mma kids judo

One of our youngest mma students practicing some judo at a family party. One of the best things about being a martial arts instructor is connecting with great families that help us teach their kids. In this video you will see one of our youngest students practicing three different throws plus she makes a point to say that falling is the most important part of training and she makes sure she bows before and after the training! That really is awesome from an instructors point of view!

BJJ Strategy- Get Up!

Just wanted to write a bit about a common BJJ strategy that we were discussing yesterday and teaching to our younger students. The concept or strategy is that when you are on the bottom in a self defense situation or in a competition sometimes your best option is to get back to your feet. A lot of BJJ students forget this concept and just think that if they are on the bottom they have to stay on the bottom. Is is very important to practice getting back to your feet when you are in the guard.

It might be a self defense situation where you do not want to stay on your back for many – many reasons, it might be a competition where you are not able to sweep or submit your opponent, it might be an mixed martial arts fight where you are taking punches or it can be any time when you are on your back have the other person in your guard and need to or want to stand back up.

The technique is actually very simple but like anything else it just needs to be drilled and practiced in the correct manner. Just having this technique in your arsenal will greatly increase your odds of ‘winning’ when you are in the guard. You can get really good at this technique and strategy and learn to make effective use of it whenever you are on the ground or you can use this to create openings for sweeps and submissions while on the ground. It will also change the way someone tries to pass your guard or strike within your guard as well. So practicing this technique will pay off for you in a number of ways and unless you plan to never be on your back you will have plenty of times to practice and use this technique while training.

Here is a short video of some of our young bjj students practicing this technique.

For many of them it was the first time they got to practice this move but many of them picked it up pretty quickly. If you havent worked on this technique recently I strongly urge you to make sure you try it while rolling. It will definitely change things ups a bit and create some situations for you to explore while training. As always if you have any questions please just let us know!

Scranton bjj for kids

Kids at scranton mma learning how to stand up from guard in our bjj class. For many of our kids this was the first time they were taught the technique or even the idea that from the bottom position they could stand up and get back to their feet. Some got it right away and as always some needed a bit more practice at the end you can see one of our students had the right idea but was a bit off and then with a little help from sensei and from his more experienced training partner he was able to get the technique down. Our kids then progressed into some games and then drills were they got to use this same technique in a more 'live', energetic and realistic situations. They had a blast and we will continue to build on this technique and overall strategy. For more info on training bjj at scranton mma vist http://ift.tt/1lYuYob

Scranton Mixed Martial Arts Jiu Jitsu Promotions

This weekend a large group of Scranton MMA coaches went down to Balance Studios headquarters for a belt promotion ceremony. We were very honored to be invited by Phil and Ricky Migliarese. The mats were filled with talent! There were more gracie jiu jitsu black belts on the mat then I have ever seen before. Balance has a very rich history since they have been training directly with the Gracie family before the first UFC!

The highlight of the day for the Scranton MMA crew was watching Sensei Dom get his black belt from Phil and Ricky! Dom has over 15 years of Gracie Jiu Jitsu experience and his black belt promotion was a great moment for him. Dom really appreciated that so many of the Scranton MMA coaches went down to support him and witness this once in a life time achievement. So please when you see Dom congratulate him for all of his hard work and for everything he dos for Scranton MMA. Some of our newer members might not know but trust me when I say it Scranton MMA would not be the same without Dom and we would have never gotten to this point without his great knowledge of jiu jitsu, his patience :) and his ability to coach and instruct! He really is one of the absolute best things about Scranton MMA!

Dom was not the only instructor to get promoted from Scranton MMA. Frank Alogna was promoted to Brown Belt! Frank is one of the most dedicated Jiu Jitsu practitioners you will ever meet. He has worked tremendously hard over the last few years as a purple belt to improve not only as a competitor but also as a coach and instructor. Please when you see Frank at the academy congratulate him on his recent promotion.

We also had three of our coaches get promoted to purple belt. Matt Marcinek, Jess Papi and Steve Peragallo were all promoted from Blue belt to Purple belt! Again all three of them are very dedicated and hard working. They all compete and coach and have helped Scranton MMA Grow into the academy it is today. Please when you see them on the mat congratulate them on their promotions!

Scranton mixed martial arts students practicing a judo takedown they were just shown. The throw they are practicing works well in a self defense situation or a competition. It is very effective and teaches them how to grip, move and take someone down. The students are well supervised so they get to practice this in a very safe manner on a very safe and clean mat area. Sensei Tim Scranton MMA Keystone State Games

Quick video of Sensei Tim From Scranton MMA competing in a Judo tournament. Tim is able to choke out his opponent very quickly using a very effective choke that he has worked on for YEARS. Tim always had a great presence on the mat when competing and always competing with great intensity and focus. Hard to see in this match because it is so quick but if you watch with a close eye you will notice. Tim now spends most of his time focusing on Keystone CrossFit but we love having him around and always enjoy his input. For more info about our judo program pls visit http://ift.tt/1nvgrRJ

Takedown for Scranton BJJ Competitors

Cool throw for the bjj students or judo students to use to get some points and start the match in a great position. Sensei Tom breaks down the basic elements and goes over the main points. It is from a very common grip that is becoming more and more popular in bjj tournaments. Most people take the grip and throw to the sleeve side but in this variation we are going to throw the opponent in the opposite direction. Take a look and if you have any questions let me know. BTW Sensei Frank will be posting some vids right on his page at: http://ift.tt/1l9lMNb
